Missing Scenes
R. Hunter crafts meticulously detailed yet free-flowing and expansive soundscapes, creating immersive sonic worlds that evoke a wide range of emotional responses. For more than 20 years, he has been creating music that seamlessly integrates elements of the natural world and the intangible with expressive synthesis and innovative sound design. Through his compositions, complex frequencies coalesce into melodic corridors, intersecting at the edges of space and texture, blurring the line between the organic and the synthetic.
Hunter employs field recordings, modular synthesis, and electronics to transform harmonic fragments and dissonance into a thoughtful and inviting sonic palette. His compositions evolve with deliberate patience, drawing listeners into the intricate aural depths of each transient moment. Within his work, liminal spaces emerge as quiet invitations for introspection and discovery.
His work often finds inspiration in nature, the interplay of darkness and light, and the significance of memory, sleep, and dreaming—forming a meaningful foundation for his sonic explorations. Across his diverse projects, he creates sound worlds that are both engaging and profoundly evocative, drawing listeners into spaces where the boundaries between sound, emotion, and environment dissolve.
His expansive body of work includes a variety of monikers and collaborations, such as Conversations About the Light, Occulted Sound, Self Spiller, and Snares of Sixes. In 2021, he launched his project missing scenes with a triptych of moon-themed recordings. Most recently, he released dream or memory?, the project's latest album and the first to feature percussionist Steve Lyman.
A graduate of Evergreen State College’s Film, Video, and Audio Production Program, Hunter now lives and works in Portland, Oregon, where he regularly performs live.
